Finally found him cowering behind a blue bin about 6 houses down. So not too far away - but far enough to be lost! We walked the street calling for him many times today. We had almost given up all hope until our cat wise neighbour said try close to dusk. She was completely right - only then did he mew. He had clearly had enough of his adventure.
