Circumstances: He went out at 2300hrs and did not come back. Normally he is back within one hour and retires to bed. Only spotted he was missing this morning when he was not around for breakfaast
Other info: Cross Bengal, not long but quite heavy

Just wandered up to my room jumped on the bed and nudged me. Got up fed him. He drank quite a lot and then he retired to bed. In the morning he was able to meow and purr. I imagine he lost his voice calling out. I imagine he was let out or escaped from somewhere near. No injuries or nervous behavior so a case may be of curiosity nearly killed the cat.
