You didn't mention if your friend or yourself wanted to take ownership of this cat seeing as he's there all the time now... or how long that he's been there "all the time" without providing daily food.If you do want to take ownership, then I would suggest putting up some 'Found' posters in your local area and then if after 3 weeks noone legitimate has come forward (and especially seeing as the previous owners didn't bother to either microchip or put an ID collar on him) then you can assume the cat is now yours. You will need to tell the Vet what you are doing though.

The vet told us to keep him out. Cos he was coming in the catflap.

Sure. I can understand the vet saying that but at the same time, if it's been 3 months and you appear to be the only people looking after him - and he's now getting into a bad condition then that might alter what they say.Something else to try... attach a collar to him with your telephone number on. If he does have owners who he goes back to then they will either remove it... or call you.... but they wouldn't do neither.
